I think you are missing something when you credit the oddsmakers with great football knowledge. The oddmakers make up the spread so they can get a "buyer" on both ends of the bet! All they want is the vigorish tha comes with matching up a "buyer" and a "seller". If 55% of bettors took the Seahawks plus 5, then the line would go down to Seahawks plus 4, to put more bettors in the Steeler column. So the line is really set by "the market."
